| The Co-operative is a community
organisation created from the desire of local people to
provide goods and services not readily available, and
to act as a meeting place for the exchange of information,
ideas and experiences. For
many years it existed as a one-day per week collective,
trading basic foodstuffs and arranging purchase and
installation of alternative power systems for new dwellings
in remote locations. By 1993, it became obvious that
the demand was sufficient to take the bit between the
teeth, and strive for a more substantial entity.
After much fundraising, labour, brainstorming
and associated endeavour, in a remarkably short time,
the dedication and determination of our initial core
of members resulted in the registration of the Co-op,
and the opening of our premises, on 31st May 1994.
Co-op’s core businesses:
Rural Energy
Supplies: Design, provision and installation
of alternative energy systems, including solar, wind,
and waterpower, generation, refrigeration, and all associated
products.
Whole Food House: Fresh fruit, vegetables,
health foodstuffs, general grocery items, home brewing
supplies, garden nursery goods and plants. You name
it, we’ll supply it! (some conditions apply).
Hungry Gecko
Café: A relaxed and informal verandah
café. Wholesome foods and snacks, cappuccino,
fresh juices, cold and hot drinks. The Gecko is a friendly
town meeting place. Local functions (birthday’s
Christmas parties etc.) can be arranged.
The Co-op sells or arranges the sale
of goods and produce for members and other residents,
and act as an information outlet. We provide assistance
for those dealing with local, state and federal government
and their various departments where possible. We arrange
emergency accommodation, assist with local entertainment
and youth initiatives and provide support for any local
community groups, sport clubs, etc. We arrange TAFE
Outreach courses, retraining and work experience.
To summarise, the Co-op is
very much a community organisation, which aims to help
sustain, and enhance our town, our region, for the benefit
of current and future generations.
