Starting
at Woodenbong travel west along the Mt. Lindesay Highway
for 27km taking in the scenery of rich farmland and
forest. To your right the road is overlooked by Mt.
Clunie and Koreelah National Parks. 27 km from Woodenbong
turn left towards Urbenville. Here the road climbs to
the Tooloom National Park. Just before reaching the
rest area on the top, there is a lookout on your right
with views of the Koreelah valley.
Tooloom
National Park encompasses Tooloom Scrub a CERRA
World Heritage listed area. From the rest area which
has a picnic table, barbeque, and pit toilet, a 30 minute
loop walk takes you through some magnificent sub tropical
rainforest. For the next few kilometres the road is canopied
by this spectacular rainforest, eventually opening up
to hardwood forest with Kangaroo grass understorey.
7km
on from the rest area on the left hand side is the turn
off for Wallaby Creek where Eastern Grey Kangaroo's
have been studied for the past 25 years and the nature
program "Faces in the Mob" was filmed.
9 km from Wallaby Creek turn right to view Tooloom
Falls. NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service maintain
a picnic and camping area at the spectacular Falls,
which are 8 metres high and drop into a broad deep pool.
Tooloom is corrupted from the Gidabal
word Dooloomi, which means headlice. Tooloom Falls is
one of the most significant sites in Githabul country
and was declared an aboriginal place in 1977 under the
National Parks and Wildlife Act. Respect the site, admire
the view, take some photographs; but stay well back
from the edge and off slippery rocks.
Returning back to the Urbenville road continue on another
3 km. to this small township. On approaching Urbenville
view the Ford
Timbers Mill on the left hand side. The timber industry
has been an economic mainstay of the region for generations.
Just after entering the village limits keep an eye out
for Pioneer Cottage on the right. If you have planned
ahead, an inspection always proves most interesting.
Admire the many period buildings, which add so much
to the village’s unique character.
At Urbenville, you will find fuel, groceries, hotel,
arts and crafts. Some 200 metres past the shops on the
right hand side is the Urbenville forestry park, with
shaded picnic areas, barbeques, and toilets. A National
Parks display board provides details on parks in the
region.
Continuing along this road for another 12 km takes
you back to Woodenbong, passing through prime agricultural
land where depending on the time of your visit you may
see corn or soybean crops scattered amongst the paddocks
of grazing dairy and beef cattle.
