CAMPDRAFT
The all-Australian sport of Campdraft is enjoyed by
a growing number of people in Southern Queeensland and
Northern NSW.
Competitions
are held in almost every village in the Upper Clarence.
A loyal following of participants of all ages and social
backgrounds spend three months of each year on the competition
circuit preparing themselves for the national championship;
The Annual Warwick Gold Cup.
Lifelong friendships are made on the competition circuits,
and the campdraft family has a social network steeped
in traditional values and loyalty.
When pioneer settlers established communities across
the Darling Downs and Northern NSW they developed a
calendar of social activities to meet their needs. Along
with horse races and agricultural shows, pioneers established
a horse riding competition that reflected the skills
needed by settlers on isolated properties when working
with cattle.
Campdraft has its origins in the weekend social pleasures
of the early pioneers and has evolved to be a uniquely
Australian sport. Riders, both men and women are skilled
in the cutting and riding techniques still used in stockyards
on cattle properties today.
Participation is encouraged for all age groups and
levels of experience. Many villages have annual fundraising
events that have supported the Rescue Helicopter, local
hospital and schools and other special needs within
their communities.
