Dogs and National Parks

• You should leave your dog at home

Dogs and other domestic pets may not be taken into national parks, historic sites or nature reserves managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) as they are viewed as predators by native animals small animals and birds can be easily scared away from their homes and nesting sites, often leaving their young unprotected; they can cause a health hazard by defecating in picnic areas dog faeces carry diseases which can be harmful to wildlife and people; dog faeces add nutrients to the soil, which increases the spread of weeds; they frighten wildlife away from areas in which visitors expect to see the wildlife; they chase and/or kill wildlife and occasionally bite people; their barking can detract from the use and enjoyment of an area.

In special cases approval may be granted, such as guide dogs accompanying sight- impaired or hearing impaired visitors.
