FLORA AND FAUNA

Flora

Ten forest ecosystemsare protected within the reserve, the most extensive being forests of Northern Ranges Dry Tallowwood, Rainforest and Grey Box/Red Gum/Grey lronbark associations. There are also significant stands of the Escarpment Red Gum and Gorge Grey Box, both of which have very limited distributions. Lesser stands also occur of Northern Grassy Sydney Blue Gum and Northern Wet Brushbox forests.

There are 222 flora species recorded, significant species including common maidenhair, hare's foot fern, king orchid, Dunn's white gum, and white mahogany (Eucalyptus psammitica).

Dry rainforests of the hoop pine association occur in areas of lower rainfall, primarily on the basalt enriched soils of the southern Koreelah Range. Hoop pines and semi-deciduous species are characteristic scattered emergents, above a dense low canopy of small trees. Commonly occurring species include: sweet pittosporum, pythonwood, whalebone tree (Streblus brunonianus), broad-leaved brush wilga, quinine tree , brush caper berry, brush bloodwood, native holly, common acronychia, white, tamarind, and giant stinging tree.

Fauna

Diverse forests support a range of threatened and regionally significant fauna species, with surveys recording 8 frog, 9 reptile, 53 bird, and 14 mammal species. Records of the endangered Double-eyed Fig Parrot, vulnerable masked owl, sooty owl, and red-legged pademelon are confirmed. Many of these species rely on rainforest habitat and, are intrinsic to the CERRA World Heritage listing.

It has been predicted that the Reserve supports high quality habitat for threatened fauna such as the endangered regent honeyeater and black-breasted button-quail, and the vulnerable rose-crowned fruit dove, superb fruit-dove, glossy black-cockatoo and swift parrot.

Other threatened species likely to be within the Reserve include the greater broad-nosed bat , large bent-wing bat and little bentwing bat and several other insectivorous bats, rufous bettong the arboreal squirrel glider, yellow-bellied Glider, brush-tailed phascogale and Koala. The Reserve also represents a major habitat area for the threatened green-thighed frog.
