Following the
devastating drought of the mid 1990’s Robert and
Rosemary Clark owners of Levuka, a beef cattle property
in the Upper Clarence decided that they would need to
find alternative revenue to supplement their farm income
if they were to remain on their family property.
A range of intensive crops were trialed and a camping
venture utilizing the existing logging tracks for 4WD
enthusiasts was commenced after obtaining sound advice
from industry founder Terry Pascoe of Brooklyn Adventure
Park.
From
careful beginnings the tourism venture grew to a successful
business, with visitor numbers increasing steadily each
year. Modern facilities were built and attention to
the cleanliness of the park was the highest priority.
The park focused on family groups and a high standard
of camper etiquette. The application of high standards
has paid off with very few management problems, even
on busy weekends.
The environment was considered very important when
track networks were designed and a policy of environmental
sustainability was introduced. Through encouraging others
within the industry to work with governments and establish
high standards of environmental management a Code of
Environmental Practice and a Code of Safety Practice
has been established.
A national body, representing privately owned outdoor
recreation park operators has been formed with the aim
of giving the industry stability and credibility. Both
Robert and Rosemary were founding members of that organization
and are currently office bearers.
The success of Levuka as a weekend destination has
also seen economic benefits have flow to the villages
Urbenville and Woodenbong.
