“For most of my life I had a dream to built the
very best Hereford Beef Cattle Stud possible and in
1985 I decided to follow that dream,” said John
Lee at his Awongabong Stud Property on Kangaroo Flat
Tooloom via Urbenville.
The Upper Clarence supplies 35,000 weaners to the New
England and Southern Downs each year and the prosperity
of the industry relies on quality stock coming through
from this region.
“I could see that the best genetics were held
within just 5% of the industry, and if the Australian
Beef cattle industry is to prosper in the export markets,
we must give greater opportunity to all players within
the industry” John said.
“I would need to build a great cow herd first,
get the quality and fertility right before I could produce
good sires.
Only the best would do, I began to buy the top bulls
to build up my own herd.
New technology provided the tools for success with Breed
Plan, Cattle Care, A.I. and E.T.”
“I looked all over the world for the very best
genetics. I wanted to produce the perfect animal for
the Hereford Prime market, my bulls would be paddock
ready and bread for the conditions on the Upper Clarence”
said John.
The stud culls severely, with only 10% of the best
bull calves kept for breeding.
Awongabong Stud has just acquired a Grand Champion Bull
from Victoria and the first calves are on the ground
The quality of the calves is outstanding and their growth
rate is impressive.” John said.
John Lee has great pride in showing clients around his
property and encourages all beef producers to look at
the cowherd before buying a bull from any stud.
