The Upper Clarence region has a long history of involvement in many rural industries. From dairying to timber getting, the people of this district have had a go. Mining for gold has played a large part in the economic activity, as has the production of beef and milk. Timber from here has been used for building and furniture making all over the country. Corn has been a major crop grown in the Woodenbong area, supplying Kellogs to help make our crunchy morning cereal.

The more traditional of our rural industries still play a major role in the livelihoods of many Upper Clarence residents.

Corn

Many of the back roads of the Upper Clarence will take the traveler past waving green fields of corn.

As the main grain crop in the Upper Clarence, our corn not only provides grain for the livestock industry, particularly cattle feedloting, but also for the breakfast food industry.

Many farmers in the Urbenville and Woodenbong districts have contracts with “Kellogg’s” and are proud of their lifelong association with that company.

The lush green fields are at their best from November until February or March, when the corn begins to ripen.
