The quality of education in
a small school that offers a 13 to 1 student to teacher
ratio is evident in the student performance rate at
Urbenville Public School.
The ratio of students to teacher comes down even further
for literacy and numeracy instruction- an approach that
has resulted in performance above the state average
in Basic Skills Tests. Former students of Urbenville
Public School perform very well at their local high
school and are often Dux of their class.
Technology education has a special focus in the school.
With computers in each classroom, students have individual
access during classes and have become very confident
in computer technology, including using the Internet
and preparing PowerPoint presentations.
One of the schools outstanding initiatives is in the
area of citizenship. Although the standard of behavior
within the school is exemplary, students in Years 3
to 6 are taught conflict resolution strategies to prepare
for the difficult issues that arise in high school;
in teenage years; and in adult life.
Students who completed the program indicated that they
were more effective in dealing with situations at school
and at home. Respect for others and learning to see
the other person’s point of view were identified
by the students as the skills they valued most.
The
teachers at Urbenville Public School focus upon the
individual needs of their students and employ priority
program funding to meet the needs of students with learning
difficulties and those with special talents.
Few schools anywhere can claim they have a universally
happy school environment and that all the children at
their school have delightful personalities and do their
school proud.
