Over several years a group of people from the seven villages
that make up the Upper Clarence developed the concept
that there needed to be a stronger focus on Upper Clarence
regional development issues. They felt that the region
as a whole could benefit from increased discussion and
coordination of effort.
Whilst
the individual villages of the Upper Clarence continue
to work on their own individual needs, merit was seen
in approaching more regional issues with a single voice.
The approach should not be one of individual villages
competing against each other in project development, and
resourcing.
A project initiated by Upper Clarence Combined Landcare
to make local call Internet services accessible was
the catalyst that bought about the formation of UCCEDO.
The community representatives involved with the project
asked what else they could do to bring about an improvement
in quality of life and economic outlook within the Upper
Clarence.
All the villages share the geographic isolation and
the difficulty in accessing services, and face the same
social and economic issues. Individuals saw the value
in working together to become a lobbying and project
development body as well as gaining some level of recognition
with Local, State and Federal levels.
