Some
areas of Lanikai are accessible by 2WD, more by 4WD
but most is walking country. Walk past rock outcrops,
Grass Trees, Red Cedars and Tallow Wood to our 3km of
Clarence River where the water holes linked by rapids
are home to platypus, and water birds. Keep an eye out
for the Brush tailed rock wallabies as they peer down
from the rocky outcrops.
Walk along our 2km of Pretty Gully Creek as it chuckles
and gurgles along in its narrow bed passing through
eucalypt and rainforest on its way to join the mighty
Clarence. Don’t forget your camera, as the colours
of the rocks combine with the vegetation and the water
to provide some unique photographic opportunities.
For those a little
more adventurous, this is real mountain biking country.
On this 2,500 acre Wildlife Refuge wildlife abounds,
and it is not necessary to even leave the camping ground
to catch a glimpse of our unique natives. Red necked
wallabies graze the area by day while the rufous bettong
and long nosed bandicoot often visit at night. The quiet
observer can also see many honeyeaters and lorikeets
when the banksias, bloodwoods, acacias and tallowoods
flower.
The Lanikai Homestead,
(25km north of the Bruxner Highway on Paddys Flat Rd
and 38km south from Wallaby Creek on Paddys Flat Rd),
is your first point of contact for booking in and getting
directions to the camping ground on Paddys Hill.
